You can now experience Mississippi’s maritime heritage through a new activities center in Pascagoula.
The Mississippi Maritime Museum officially opened the facility this afternoon during a ribbon cutting ceremony on DuPont Avenue. The building is mostly administrative offices until the actual museum opens in January 2020. A 3,000 square foot education center sits just behind the facility.
Officials plan to use the area for a hands-on maritime training program for students. Mississippi Maritime Museum President Terry Bollman said, “And what we want to do is get our people, our children particularly, here to understand this rich history that they have and also what kind of bright future it holds for our young people so they can stay here, grow, raise a family, earn a living, and just be happy here.”
This project started back in 2006 as a part of the Mississippi Redevelopment Effort. Bollman says the museum will be traditional with plenty of interactive operations.
