The norovirius affecting 62 residents at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport is dangerous and very contagious, according to local health officials.
Fifteen new cases of the norovirus were reported today. Out of the 62 residents infected with the virus, nine have been hospitalized. Residents of the home began feeling ill Monday. The norovirius affects people of all ages and can cause inflammation in the stomach or intestines.
Kimaka Bowens, a nurse practitioner at Orange Grove Urgent Care, tells News 25 the norovirius is common, but could be very dangerous for someone with other health issues or who is elderly to get infected. “The confinement of a place like a school, like a hospital, like a nursing home, this is a group of people that share a community. The way viruses spread are touching, coming in contact, putting your hands in your mouth.”
Symptoms of the norovirus include stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.
