Gulfport police officers met with students at Climb CDC this morning to prep for tomorrow’s big basketball game.
Ten students are playing with the Gulfport Blue Crew team tomorrow night at 7 at Gulfport High School. At first, the CDC students were intimidated by the police presence, but officers have been coming to speak with them and easing the tension.
This is all in a continued effort to build stronger relationships with the community, especially the youth. Climb CDC student Staphone Young said, “Get to see how good everybody works together and as well as how the climb team are respectful and looking for a better opportunity in life.”
Blue Crew player Tony Alves said, “They understood where we were coming from in law enforcement and even the young police officers that we have on the basketball team, they understood where these kids were coming from. It was a good combination to have them interacting and mingling and just learning from each other.”
The game is free and open to the public. It starts at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Gulfport High School.
