If there was ever a statement week for the Southern Miss baseball team, it was this one. The Golden Eagles won all five games, capping things off with a three-game sweep at Louisiana Tech.
Heading into the weekend, the Bulldogs were rolling right along with an overall record of 16-1, but in came USM to slow that roll with one its most impressive series wins in recent memory.
As a result, the Black and Gold have climbed into the national rankings at number 25 in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. They also jumped up 48 spots in RPI all the way up to number 20 according to the official NCAA website.
Southern Miss Outfielder Mason Irby had a big part in all of this and he’s been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week for recording at least one hit in each game this week.
Meanwhile, Ole Miss had a strong showing against another ranked opponent in Vanderbilt, but Mississippi State was not able to salvage the series against Arkansas.
