A group of police officers from England are on the Coast helping run the annual Southeastern Law Enforcement Explorer Academy.
The cops from across the Atlantic have teamed up with local police officers to teach young cadets from all over the southeast about law enforcement.
Ocean Springs sophomore Molly Collum says her target is to one day become a police officer and when she heard about the Southeastern Law Enforcement Explorer Academy, she knew it was her shot. “I feel like it is building my confidence and my motivation and I’m definitely getting some friends out of it because we’re in this squad and everyone has to support each other.”
Nearly 100 kids from all over the southeast are in Biloxi for the law enforcement explorer academy. During the week long course cadets enrolled face challenges and learn skills police officers need out on the job. Fifteen agencies are helping run the academy including a police force from England. Sgt. Steve Marks said, “We arrived here on Thursday evening about 7 o’clock after traveling around 15 hours.”
And with the English officers came cadets all here on the Coast to participate in the academy.
Tuesday, a group was learning about fire arms at the Keesler Air Force Base, something completely new to those cadets from overseas. Steve Solman with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department said, “A lot of those don’t carry fire arms in their country. This may be the first time they ever carried or even touched a firearm.”
During the exercise, cadets learned all about gun safety and trigger control, but the biggest thing instructors wanted the group to learn today were leadership skills. Jeremiah Phillips is a cadet enrolled in the academy. He said, “It’s not something you just learn in school or on the streets, it’s something that a lot of kids don’t get a chance to experience. It gives them a chance to be someone and take their lives somewhere.”
“My plan is to get through school, get through high school and then I’m going to the police academy,” said Molly.
