Ocean Springs students took one step at a time on their way to class this morning to celebrate Walk to School Day.
It’s all part of a national effort to encourage kids to spend extra time with their loved ones while also getting some exercise. Pecan Park Elementary participated with a huge turnout of parents and kids pounding the pavement on Hanley Road this morning.
Members of the police and fire departments escorted the crowd as students and parents enjoyed their time together. Assistant Principal Sue Green said, “We want to bring our family and community together and anytime you add fitness and students, we love that. It’s our favorite thing. We’ve been doing this for at least six years that I know of. Each year it gets bigger and better. We have a lot more community involvement, a lot more parental involvement. It’s just a way to keep everyone together as a family.”
Although the school has been hosting Walk to School Day for at least six years, Pecan Park Elementary is celebrating 50 years of education in Ocean Springs.
